Sanctuaries of Childhood:
Nurturing a Child's Spiritual Life
by Shea Darian
Paperback, 155 pages with resources and index
When this book first came out, I waited patiently for it to arrive and, believe me, it was worth it! I had just finished reading the first chapter on the "Sanctuary of Family Life" when my teenage daughter walked in the door from school. Besides my usual greeting, I sang her a Welcome Home song and gave her a tender hug. Although she looked at me like I had gone crazy (I sing a lot, but not always after school), I could tell she appreciated the love that poured forth from my simple gesture. This easy-to-use guide is filled with thoughtful wisdom for parents, grandparents, and caregivers of ALL faiths that want to impart the divine qualities of goodness, beauty and wisdom of creation to the young lives they touch. Filled with activities, poems, songs, stories and prayers to help children (from birth to teens) stay in touch and strengthen their ties with the spiritual world from which they came. This makes a wonderful gift for yourself and those you love!
There are so many wonderful things that hands can do: saying hello, clapping, sharing toys, drawing, and building!. This well written book may help a child you know who uses his/her hands for hitting to learn more appropriate ways for using hands, while exploring alternatives for expressing those unpleasant feelings. The presentation and brightly colored illustrations are so cheerful and positive that any young child will enjoy reading this book. Also, it's a nice way to approach this difficult behavioral problem. It includes some supportive information and interactive activity suggestions for parents and teachers, as well. Highly recommended for use with children ages 2 and older.

All Year Round
by Ann Druitt, Christine Fynes-Clinton, Marije Rowling
Paperback, 316 pages with index
Brimming with stories, poems, songs, and things to make and cook, this book offers itself as a friendly guide to the seasonal round of festivals. Arranged by season, each chapter includes a calendar of holidays to celebrate and, believe me, there are enough to keep you partying all year long! Some of my favorites are the more obscure ones that have fallen out of favor in our modern world, such as Shrove Tuesday celebrated prior to Lent, Whitsunday, and St. Nicholas Day. This book has so many ideas, you can't possibly do them in one year and that's why it's such a value. As I have, you will return to it again and again.
