The Art of Feltmaking
By Anne Einset Vickrey
Paperback, 144 pages with index
Just looking through this book motivated me to gather my carded wool and start felting! It's so incredibly easy, even young children can do it with very little assistance. This comprehensive guide starts with the basics, such as dyeing wool with soft drink powers, felting ropes, beads and balls. Then it gradually moves into more advanced projects, such as creating dolls, a menagerie of small animals, puppets, mittens, hats, slippers and more. It's a tactile experience that is not only appealing, but also sparks creativity and imagination. This fine book offers many craft and project ideas using this delightful medium. The brightly colored photographs are inspiring in themselves! The first part of the book deals with creating wool pictures, including techniques and many examples of classic stories. You Can Weave! Projects for Young Weavers
By Kathleen Monaghan and Hermon Joyner
Hardcover, 96 pages with index
I've been on the lookout for a good instructional book about weaving for children and teachers for a while - and I finally found it! From simple paper weaving to basket weaving, this excellent guide and project book takes you step-by-step through each project and technique. Both color and black-and-white photos, along with illustrations and diagrams, clearly illustrate each project. Learn how easy it is to weave patterns and pictures on a loom, make a bookmark or belt utilizing the drinking straw weaving method, design your own plaid cloth, weave a bead bracelet, or create a basket - it's all in here. No special or expensive equipment is required (you can make a loom out of a piece of cardboard). The last chapter tells you how to make a frame lap loom and bead loom, if you want something more permanent. This is the very best available. Recommended for ages 8+ and teachers.
This one isn't a repeat of the first book in this series -- not at all! Instead it focuses more on creating small figures, toys, dolls, fairies and landscapes for a Seasonal Table. The photos of the projects are breathtaking, although very easy if you understand the basics of felting and winding wool. It also contains a short, but detailed section on dyeing wool using plants and other natural materials. (Even if you don't dye your own wool, you'll appreciate the process.) The hand-felted interactive play mats, complete with hidden spaces, are a completely new idea that children will enjoy using with their new felted animals and dolls. There are so many delightful ideas in this book; you and your children won't know where to start!

Making Fairy-Tale Wool Animals
By Angelika Wolk-Gerche
Hardcover, 80 pages
As the author points out in her introduction, "the figures created with unspun wool always have soft, slightly hazy edges and contours that are pleasing to the eye and to the touch. One views them as if through a soft-focus lens. They harmonize with one another but remain vivid, yet never obtrusive." What a beautiful description of the enchanting animals that can be created with this book! From household pets, to farm animals, to storybook animal characters, this book offers a comprehensive selection of projects. (Click on the book cover to see an enlarged photo of the front and back cover, showing more examples of finished projects.) In addition to step-by-step instructions and colorful photographs, games, songs and other activity suggestions are listed with each project! This is a wonderful book for the beginning or seasoned wool crafter or teacher. Recommended for ages 6 to adult. Also, techniques can be adapted for needlefelting, as well.

Designer Needle Felting
By Terry Taylor and Candie Cooper
Hardcover, 128 pages with index and project templates
I LOVE this book, but am a little disappointed in the cover! Although the black & white “Bubble Pillow” is a cute design from the book, it hardly represents the wide variety of colorful, exciting projects that can be found within (so don’t judge this book by its cover). This needle felting book covers a broad range, from stylish two-dimensional embellishments on clothing and lovely decorative accents for the home to adorable 3-D sculptures and jewelry – it has it all. The contents are divided into these categories: Hearth & Home Projects, Wearables, Jewelry and Accessories, and Just for Fun (ornaments, toys, and gifts). The fun project titles are enticing, such as Tutti Frutti Baubles, Hot Tamale Scarf & Hat, Lollipop Bag, Pigs Do Fly, Adorned Denim Vest, Stained Glass Pincushion (a great needle felting accessory), Oooh la la Berets, Suiting Bangle (beautiful bracelet), and many more! These should keep you busy felting for quite a while!

Needle Felting by Hand or Machine
By Linda Turner Griepentrog and Pauline Wilde Richards
Paperback, 126 pages
This book contains 15 easy, but very creative projects that can be done by hand or with a felting machine. (A felting machine looks similar to a sewing machine, but has 5-8 felting needles instead of a sewing needle.) Some of my favorite projects are needle felted buttons (that incorporate a button form) that can be used as buttons or to create jewelry, an adorable “Sheep Thrills” throw blanket decoration that combines needle felting with a simple sewing machine technique that adds texture and dimension, and a beautiful handbag that begins with tapestry fabric and is highlighted with needle felting to “color inside the lines.” The valuable lessons to be learned from this book are the exciting and different combinations of needle felting and simple sewing to create a distinctive and truly unique look to your projects! Not only needle felters, but also sewers will enjoy this book.

Creative Felt
By Angelika Wolk-Gerche
Paperback, 91 pages
“Felting and making toys and gifts” is how this book is described, which isn’t nearly exciting enough to express the wealth of information and abundance of wonderful projects contained in this book. The techniques of traditional wet felting are thoroughly illustrated with step-by-step instructions and excellent, motivating color photos. The projects definitely have a European flair and look to them. My favorite chapters are Felted Things for a Baby and Making Felt with Children with many unusual and fun project ideas, such as bottle covers, fully felted dolls, hand felted clothing and shoes for dolls (I LOVE the shoes!), a recorder case, and toys for all ages. But there are many other appealing projects that aren’t necessarily for children, such as spectacle cases (for eyeglasses), jewelry, book covers, treasure bags, and a beautiful shawl. Certainly many of the projects can be needle felted or combined with the wet method, although it is not suggested to do so. This book takes you through the basics of wet felting and beyond!
