The Blueberry Pie Elf
The Blueberry Pie Elf
by Jane Thayer, Illus. by Anthony Accardo
Paperback, 32 pages

The retail edition of this delightful book went out of print years ago.  But after a long search, I was able to secure a few copies of this newer edition available only to schools.  You won't find this book in stores!  The original was printed in 1959 in only three colors.  This reissue, with adorable full-color illustrations, is a rare treat!  In the story, a little house elf lives unnoticed with a family and, after tasting the family's dessert of blueberry pie, he longs for more.  He does everything he can think of to tell the people he wants more blueberry pie, but to no avail.  One evening, quite by accident, the elf's presence is discovered and his wish comes true.

Sweet Dreams: 36 Bedtime Wishes
By Cooper Edens and Sheryl Abrams
Boxed set of 36 cards

I just knew the minute I held this enchanting box of wishes in my hand that I would love it!  It is a collection of 36 bedtime wishes for you to share with your child, each accompanied by a vintage children’s book illustration.  The idea is to pick a card, recite the verse together, then slip it under your child’s pillow to encourage happy thoughts and sweet dreams.  The cards are printed on heavy-duty cardstock, making them quite durable for repeated handling and, as suggested, for dreaming upon.  It is a comforting bedtime ritual for children, but I think adults would love it, too!  The cards are so beautiful and have such a smooth, satin finish to them, they just feel good in your hand.  They also could be used as fairy messages -- the Tooth Fairy highly recommends them, as do I.

The Elves’ Big Adventure
By Daniela Drescher
Hardcover, 24 pages

Old Redcap is an inventor and very resourceful elf.  It is in his latest invention, a runaway hot-air balloon, that he and his friend, Bluecap have an exciting adventure sailing through the sky as dusk gives way to darkness.  Eventually, the balloon floats down and settles in the land of the fairies – on the back of a sleeping dragon!  The queen is delighted to receive the visitors and asks their help in awakening the dragon so he can resume his watch over their land and rid it of Dulcamara, the wicked gnome.  With pleasure, Redcap uses his creative skills to save the day with another invention and peace returns to the land.  Although this story may sound complicated, it really is a simple and delightful story for children as young as three years-old to enjoy.  The colorful paintings are wonderful and add so much detail to the story.  (Special Note: Page two in the book opens up into a full-size poster of Redcap and Bluecap taking off in the balloon.)  Great fun for ages 3-9.
