The Light in the Lantern
The Light in the Lantern: Stories for
an Advent Calendar
By Georg Dreibig
Paperback, 80 pages

In the days leading up to Christmas, Mary and Joseph's path to Bethlehem is fraught with difficulties, but as the stories in this book reveal, a small miracle happens on each day. The story of each miracle brings us a little closer to Christmas, until we finally reach the stable in Bethlehem where the light in the lantern is waiting in anticipation of the Christ Child's birth.  With 28 individual stories, this book may be used as an "Advent Calendar," with the first week's stories relating to the mineral world, the second week's stories to the plant world, followed by the animal kingdom and finally to the human beings. The Winter Book: Songs, Chants & Stories for
  the Yuletide Season
By Claudia Chapman
Paperback, 108 pages

The author invites us to "take part in the time honored Celtic tradition of telling stories and sharing songs as the nights grow long with winter." This collection of stories, songs and essays is arranged as an advent calendar, with something new to read each day. Interspersed between the readings are ten beautiful new Yuletide carols, written in the language of nature. Filled with spirit, yet still universal, they are suitable for sharing at Winter Concerts, Solstice Celebrations or on Christmas Eve. But this is more than just a book for the Advent season.  The calendar of days begins with October 31st (the Celtic New Year) and includes All Souls Day, Martinmas (Nov. 11) and Thanksgiving readings before launching into the traditional Yuletide season from December 1st through 26th. There are special animal stories for Christmas Eve and a Mummers play for New Year's Day. The calendar ends on Epiphany (Jan. 6) with a poem about a mystical journey by the stag, the eagle and the salmon. Included are drawings the author created for her son's advent calendar and directions for starting your own family tradition.  I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this engaging book. I’m sure you will agree, it will add a touch of beauty and joy to the season and, like me, you will look forward to the daily readings as the season progresses!

NOTE:  Although this book is designed for the family, it is not written strictly for children.  A couple of the daily reflections are definitely from a parent's perspective, in which the author recalls what it was like when her child discovered that parents are Santa.  (Dec. 15th & 17th readings).  Please be aware and do not read these sections aloud to your young child, so as not to reveal any secrets they may not be ready to hear.
